About Newcastle University
Visit Official WebsiteNewcastle University (legally the University of Newcastle upon Tyne) is a world-class, red-brick research powerhouse and a founding member of the prestigious Russell Group and the N8 Research Partnership. Tracing its foundations back to the establishment of the School of Medicine and Surgery in 1834 and Armstrong College in 1871, the university long operated as the federal Newcastle division of Durham University before achieving full autonomy by Act of Parliament in 1963. Today, Newcastle stands in the global top 110 universities (QS World University Rankings), educating over 28,000 students from more than 140 nations. The university spans a historic 50-acre city-centre campus centered around the Grade II-listed red-brick Armstrong Building, King's Hall, and the iconic Arches, paired with the state-of-the-art £350 million Newcastle Helix—a 24-acre urban innovation district and living research laboratory hosting the School of Computing in the Urban Sciences Building (USB), the National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD), and the National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA). Newcastle's Faculty of Medical Sciences is world-renowned for pioneering mitochondrial donation therapy ('three-parent IVF') and age-related health breakthroughs. Newcastle also carries an inspiring civil rights heritage: in November 1967, it became the only university in the United Kingdom to award an honorary doctorate to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during his lifetime, where he delivered his final historic speech outside the United States before his assassination in 1968.
