Plan for the city as well as the course

Living in the UK involves everyday decisions about housing, travel, food and the support you will use. Costs and routines vary between cities and campuses, so build a plan around your actual university location.

UCAS advises international students to investigate accommodation once they have a study place because university accommodation can fill up. Ask the accommodation office what is available and which deadlines apply.

Compare accommodation before committing

Compare the complete cost and contract, not just a weekly headline. Check the tenancy dates, deposit, included bills, travel to campus and what happens if your plans change.

  1. 1

    University accommodation

Ask about application deadlines, eligibility, accessibility and whether a place is guaranteed for your circumstances.

  2. 2

    Private accommodation

Check the provider, written agreement, payment requirements and local university guidance before sending money.

  3. 3

    Location and daily routine

Check transport times, access to food shops and the facilities that matter to you.

Build a realistic daily-life budget

Separate rent, bills, groceries, transport, communications and course materials. Add the actual upfront costs you need to pay, and compare the timing with confirmed funding.

Ask the university for current local guidance on health services, required insurance or immigration-related health arrangements, banking and transport. Requirements depend on your circumstances; use the relevant official instructions rather than assumptions.

Make your first weeks manageable

Attend induction, complete enrolment and learn how to contact academic support, wellbeing services and the international office. Keep important contact details accessible.

IAIC planning suggestion: choose a few small tasks for each day instead of trying to organise everything at once. Meet a coursemate, find your teaching rooms and try a society or campus activity. Ask for support early if housing, money or isolation starts affecting your studies.
