About Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Tracing its roots to 1834 and established as an independent Dutch-speaking university in 1970, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is an internationally oriented research university located in the heart of Brussels, the capital of Europe. Operating under the guiding principle of "Vrij Onderzoek" (Free Inquiry — without dogma or ideological constraints), VUB fosters a vibrant culture of independent critical thinking, scientific curiosity, and societal commitment. Accommodating over 20,000 students—with more than 25% international representation hailing from 140+ countries—VUB combines a park-like urban campus environment with strong global connectivity. It is a founding member of the EUTOPIA European University Alliance and co-founded the prestigious Brussels Faculty of Engineering (Bruface) in joint partnership with its sister university ULB. VUB is renowned for pioneering breakthroughs in biotechnology, robotics, artificial intelligence, photonics, medical sciences (including the invention of ICSI reproductive technology at UZ Brussel), and international law.
