Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM), or the National Defence University of Malaysia, is the premier national defense university and higher technical military academy of Malaysia. Located strategically at Kem Perdana Sungai Besi in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, UPNM traces its roots back to the establishment of the Military Academy of Malaysia (Akademi Tentera Malaysia - ATMA) in 1995, before being officially chartered as a full-fledged public university by the Malaysian Government on 10 November 2006. UPNM operates under a unique dual-governance model under the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) and the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF). The university caters to both Military Cadet Officers (Pegawai Kadet), who graduate with academic degrees alongside commissions as officers in the Malaysian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, and Air Force), and Civilian Undergraduates (Pelajar Awam), who pursue rigorous, accredited professional degrees in engineering, medicine, cyber security, defence science, maritime technology, logistics, and strategic international studies.
