About Bergen School of Architecture
The Bergen School of Architecture (Bergen Arkitekthøgskole - BAS) was established in 1986 by architect Svein Hatløy as an independent alternative conservatory to traditional polytechnic architecture education. Situated directly on the water's edge in an iconic repurposed concrete grain silo in Sandviksboder, Bergen, the school is globally celebrated for its commitment to "Open Form" — an architectural doctrine emphasizing human ecology, landscape context, creative improvisation, and full-scale 1:1 construction. Accredited by NOKUT and the European Union under Directive 2005/36/EC, BAS confers the protected Norwegian professional title "Sivilarkitekt" (Master of Architecture) through a full 5-year integrated curriculum and a dedicated 2-year international Master track taught in English.
